64-bit iLife '11 said to arrive in August with a 'mystery' application
26 July 2010 22:03 | Technology News, Apple Insider, Apple | PermalinkApple's iLife '11 suite will launch in August for $79, with all included applications being 64-bit, including a new "mystery" addition, a rumor suggests.
French Apple website Mac4Ever (via Google Translate) reported last week that iLife '11 will launch soon, on Saturday, August 7. The updated application suite is said to include improvements in the Faces and Places features in iPhoto, and will reportedly add greater integration with social networking sites.
Citing a "well informed" source, the site also said that iWeb will be brand new, and iLife '11 will include a new "mystery" application. It also said that iDVD will not be included, and instead will be downloaded like iMovie HD. Finally, the update will also reportedly include a MobileMe gallery beta with Faces and Places.
The iLife suite currently includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand and iWeb. The software is included on every new Mac. The last update, iLife '09, launched in January of 2009, with major upgrades to all of its applications, including the Faces and Places features in iPhoto, and the addition of the Precision Editor to iMovie.
In January, Apple was rumored to introduce iLife 2010, a report that didn't pan out. Instead, the Cupertino, Calif., company held a special event to introduce the iPad.

Apple to use press conference to alter time and space, eliminate iPhone problem
15 July 2010 20:37 | Scoopertino, Apple, Funnies | Permalink
Cupertino, CA — According to sources, Apple will not only stun the audience at Friday’s press conference, it will make them disappear — along with all traces that iPhone’s antenna problem ever existed.
Steve Jobs will use the occasion to introduce Time Machine Pro. Slightly larger than Apple’s original wireless backup disk, Time Machine Pro takes backup to a whole new level. It allows the user to revert to a previous version of the disk — and/or everything around it. It’s all controlled with a simple iPad app.

Apple to hold iPhone 4 press conference on Friday
On Wednesday afternoon Apple invited several journalists, including one from Macworld, to its Cupertino campus on Friday for a "press conference about iPhone 4." Presumably the company will use the event to publicly address all the controversy swirling around this product, most notably reports of antenna interference issues.
Discussion of iPhone 4 reception issues kicked into a higher gear this week with Consumer Reports withdrawing its endorsement of the product, despite otherwise higher ratings.

Apple are messing up the iPhone 4 for me!
13 July 2010 11:38 | CNET News, fail, Reflective Journal, Apple | PermalinkApple must have known that holding the iPhone in a certain way would cause the signal drop problem, as this hardware fault was shown off as well as the iPhone 4 its self. (Steve Jobs asks, no tells the audience to stop using wireless/3G, mean while the iPhone 3GS had already loaded the page). Distractions later Steve Jobs holds the iPhone 4 in a different way.
I think recalling after the fault had became clear in the field would have been less embarrassing, than telling customers they are holding it wrong or saying its a software problem. (By the way Apple, telling the software to lie about how much signal there is won’t fix dropped calls and no Internet).
Apple must think its customers are stupid or something, and that early adopters are so in love with the Great Apple and the word according to Jobs, they will not sue or switch to HTC, Motorola or Sony Ericsson (All on Google Android).
I may even at this rate not upgrade in November to the iPhone 4, I might wait for Sony Ericsson to put out an Android powered Cyber-shot phone.

But as you know, Apple's response has been less than consumer-friendly. As we know, there's the infamous, "don't hold it that way" advice. The same statement told users to simply purchase one of many available cases, including one Apple sells.
Next up, the company unveiled a "stunning" software problem that over-inflated signal quality...but shortly thereafter, AppleCare started advising customers that any forthcoming software fixes wouldn't fix the hardware-based antenna problem. And of course, the official customer service script, if this leak is to be believed, advises tech support to tell customers that, in fact, the antenna is awesome, but even so, don't hold it that way, maybe buy a case, and no, AppleCare is not to give out a free case, offer any kind of warranty repair, or deal with the problem in any satisfactory manner at all.
Oh, and now Apple is deleting mentions of the Consumer Report findings on its support forums, as it's wont to do when problems crop up that it doesn't want to acknowledge.

Dear iPhone 4 Users,
The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.
To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.
At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

Fix iPhone 4 signal glitch … with Scotch tape?

Apple introduces iHand: the right way to hold your iPhone
28 June 2010 09:28 | Scoopertino, Apple, Funnies | PermalinkCupertino, CA — Ladies and gentlemen, a big hand for iPhone. Literally.
Responding to complaints that the new iPhone 4 loses signal when held by a human hand, Apple today launched iHand — a synthetic appendage that makes it easy for anyone to “get a grip” on iPhone and remain connected.
iHand is so easy to use, it doesn’t require a manual. Simply insert iPhone 4 into iHand’s adjustable fingers, raise it to your ear and start talking. With iHand, you get all the functionality of the human hand, without the signal-sucking biology that encumbers most iPhone owners.

22 June 2010 10:23 | MacWorld, Apple | PermalinkAs expected, Apple opened the download gate for iOS 4 today.
The mobile operating system upgrade appeared to download and install with few problems, although some users complained that backups of their iPhones were taking much longer than usual.
Downloads initiated by Computerworld staffers immediately upon the 1 p.m. ET launch took approximately 19 minutes to complete, while users on Apple's iPhone support forum reported total upgrade times -- including downloading the update, backing up their iPhone and restoring it with the new operating system -- that ranged from 20 minutes to over an hour. The iOS 4 update weighed in at almost 580MB.

In a statement on Wednesday about the iPhone 4 going on sale, Apple announced that it clocked more than 600,000 pre-orders for the new phone—far higher than it expected to receive:
Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple’s new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions. Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.

Apple blinks: New iPad XL to offer Flash capability
24 May 2010 09:14 | Scoopertino, Apple, Funnies | PermalinkCupertino, CA — Apple effectively raised the white flag in its war against Adobe today, announcing the new iPad XL — a new iPad specially designed to run Adobe’s Flash software.
Steve Jobs explained the turnaround at this morning’s press conference. “When I wrote that Thoughts On Flash thing, I was clear about our objections to Flash. At the end of the day, it’s just a battery hog. But as our customers well know, we care what they think. If Flash is what they want, that’s what we’re going to give them. Adobe couldn’t overcome the obstacles with Flash, so we went out and found a partner who could.”
That partner is Honda. Their engineering team has invented a mobile power generator that, according to Apple’s press release, “integrates perfectly with iPad in form and function.”
Just insert iPad into the XL’s side-mounted socket. The diesel-powered generator starts up automatically, providing ample power to run Flash-dependent websites for up to 22.5 hours on a single tank.
“Honda has engineered the hell out of this thing,” added Jobs, “This is the world’s quietest combustion engine — only 96 decibels. The revolutionary iPad XL gives you all the magic of iPad, and makes it possible to run the flashiest and most tasteless Flash sites on earth.”
iPad XL’s unique swiveled handle and wheels make portability a breeze, so it can be moved as easily as a picnic cooler or Sears tool chest.
Apple promises an accessory kit in the fall providing a flexible hose for venting exhaust fumes to any window within 20 feet, making it feasible to use iPad XL in meeting rooms and board rooms.
Can iPhone XL be far behind? Sources say that a scaled back version of the iPad XL, perhaps only half the size, is already being tested in the wild. Keep an eye out for an iPhone in one very large disguising case.
