Design Out Crime

The Home Office’s Design and Technology Alliance Against Crime and the Design Council have established a project called Design Out Crime. It is showing how designers can get to the root of a crime problem and stop it happening.

This month, it's alcohol related crime in the spotlight as agency Design Bridge unveil the prototype pint glasses they have designed to reduce the injuries caused by glassing attacks and also provide pubs and beer drinkers with a better branded, more sensual drinking experience.

The first adds a thin film of clear bio-resion to the inside of any glass. The tought films adds strength to the glass and prevents it from falling to dangerous pieces when broken. (read more)

From a cute face in the drug free zone to where's Didcot to website design (looking for ways to improve mine, www.augersonartconservation.com), to the "personal mythology stories" under the "college" section of yours, I have been very impressed.

Really loved the stories of people. Reminded me a little of the "Talk of the Town" section of the New Yorker Magazine, which gives short, interesting nonfictional anecdotes about random folks' lives that benefit from a slightly whimsical tone of voice (you'll have to buy a copy of the magazine to know precisely what I'm talking about, the online version does not have this, or at least it is not accessible without a subscription). I think you would be successful at doing a similar series of anecdotes about life in Didcot. Or a cross between a New Yorker type of story and the kind of stories about "Lake Wobegone" that Garrison Keeler tells on NPR radio (available in podcast), but set in Didcot.

That P in PHP stands for 'pink': It's Nerd Barbie!

You don't even have to ask: Of course she has a pink laptop.

Earlier on Friday, toymaker Mattel announced the results of an online contest to name the profession that the latest edition of Barbie dolls would have, and ultimately two were named: alongside "News Anchor" was the popular-vote winner, "Computer Engineer Barbie." Yes. She has a Bluetooth headset, a pink laptop, a smartphone, and hot-pink glasses. Oh, and she wears sparkly black leggings and a neon green shirt patterned with binary code, the sort of outfit that was probably only acceptable among Burning Man attendees in the late 1990s who liked to talk about "cyberspace." Actually, judging by that outfit, a Pets.com sock puppet would make a great accessory for the new doll.

According to a release from Mattel, the unveiling of Computer Engineer Barbie--she'll hit stores this fall--coincides with "a year-long, global brand initiative to inspire girls of all ages." The social-media-centric "I Can Be" poll that pitted Computer Engineer and News Anchor alongside Surgeon, Architect, and Environmentalist (over half a million votes were cast) is a big part of some image repair for the iconic doll, which that has often been decked by feminists for promoting unhealthy body image, materialism, conformity, and the pigeonholing of women into traditional roles.

Some of the other options in the "I Can Be" series that were already in stores at the time of the contest are "Ballerina," "Bride," and "Babysitter." Enough said. But, to be fair, the two newest entries are the 125th and 126th careers for Barbie throughout her five-decade history, so there have been some more interesting ones in the mix over the years: numerous U.S. military officers, astronauts, chefs, diplomats, and um, wedding stylists.

The fact that there is a "Computer Engineer Barbie" is notable not only because it's a legitimate new "professional" entry into the series, but especially because computer science is a field in which women continue to be dramatically underrepresented--way more so than among, say, news anchors or architects.

There are, obviously, two sides to this. On the plus side, yes, millions of young girls play with Barbie dolls, and Mattel can certainly put forth the argument (and some psychologists might agree) that career-focused Barbies introduce them to an array of potential careers that they might neither consider for themselves nor deem "acceptable" based on the judgments of their schoolmates both male and female. Researchers looking into the dearth of women in computer science often find that junior-high and high school girls simply don't find it very interesting, and numerous programs have popped up to help dispel misconceptions and spread awareness about the kinds of career options that are possible.

On the other side, does giving a 6-year-old girl a busty doll with sparkly leggings and hot pink glasses to match her plastic laptop do anything to address those problems? Laptops, smartphones, and Bluetooth headsets are the sorts of things that professionals of all varieties use on a constant basis. If Mattel's "I Can Be" campaign is sincere, I want to see the company making an effort to show that being a woman in technology is about more than picking out a pair of cute pink glasses to match your iPhone case.

Is the writing on Computer Engineer Barbie's binary-code shirt actually a secret code that girls who own the doll can figure out? See, that'd be a start.

Locus OS is a user interface concept for portable devices. It changes aspects of its UI based on the user’s location.

The idea of organizing files into projects seems interesting. The movie doesn’t show much of how this works - it seems users can either interact with their files in a spatial way, or using a timeline, but the timeline is never shown. Files do not seem to be associated with specific applications.

The system seems a bit disjointed, switching from a rich graphical user interface to a kind of text-based menu structure at one point. But it certainly contains some neat ideas.

Last Friday, PinkNews.co.uk revealed that the launch of the Football Association's video to tackle homophobia in the sport had been postponed.

FA chiefs said they needed more time to work on the project, which was criticised by some of those involved.

Former NBA basketball player John Amaechi told PinkNews.co.uk the video, in the form of a viral ad, was an "expletive-laden rant", while Peter Tatchell said it was not in the style he had hoped for.

MTV No Longer About 'Music'

MTV has released a new redesigned logo, after a 30-year run with the classic iconic Frank Olinsky-designed logo we all grew up with. The redesign isn’t that much different, mostly a one color close-up. The big change is the exclusion of the “Music Television” tagline, which had run underneath the original. Of course, this is a long time coming. as MTV hasn’t been considered a music television network in years. And today most of the program is teen-focused reality shows.

According to the press release, the new logo

“represents a new visually defined MTV, stimulating its past, present and future and embracing it’s diversity. Everything from Jersey Shore, to the VMAs to collaborations with the MoMA. The logo is part of MTV’s re-invention to connect with today’s millennial generation and bring them in as part of the channel.”

NHS 'paying for ex-gay therapy'

The National Health Service is paying for people to have therapy to turn them straight, it has been claimed.

According to an investigation by the Independent, some GPs are referring people to 'reparative' therapists to help them change their sexual orientation.

Research released last year from University College London found that one in six UK psychiatrists and psychotherapists have tried to change a patient's sexual orientation.

The newspaper claimed that the co-ordination of the American 'ex-gay' movement is inspiring UK therapists to seek more credibility through research and government funding.

Gay writer Patrick Studwick posed as a man struggling with his sexual orientation and visited two therapists after attending a talk in London by Dr Joseph Nicolosi, the founder of the American National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH).

One therapist, named only as Lynne, told him he was experiencing "same-sex attraction" because emotionally, parts of him had not developed.

Strudwick was told that it was "very likely" he was sexually abused by a family member as a child. He was also told that HIV-positive people can be healed by the power of prayer.

When Strudwick asked how a friend could be referred to her for help with homosexuality, she said:

"I think it would be better to say anxiety and depression [to a GP] initially and then we can take it from there."

"He can usually get four sessions with the practice, which are paid for by the NHS."

Strudwick was also invited to attend a meeting with Dr Jeffrey Satinover, 62, an American psychiatrist.

In the meeting, Satinover discussed ways to gain credibility and money for ex-gay therapy, citing a training programme which could be linked with a university, along with PhD research into the field.

The study from University College London found that 17 per cent of the 1,400 professionals questioned had attempted to help patients "reduce" gay or lesbian feelings, utilising techniques such as aversion therapy, more commonly used in the 1970s and 1980s.

The therapy involved associating gay imagery with electronic shocks. But, just four per cent of therapists and psychiatrists said that they would try to use such treatments if asked by a patient today.

Some of the comments from therapists who did offer treatments that claim to change a patient's sexuality were shocking.

"Although homosexual feelings are usual in people, their physical expression, and being a person’s only way of having sexual relations is problematic."

One anonymous therapist wrote.

"The physical act for male homosexuals is physically damaging and is the main reason in this country for AIDS/HIV. It is also perverse."

Another wrote:

"Where someone had a strong faith, then working to help the person accept their feelings but manage them appropriately may be the best approach if [the] person felt they would lose God and therefore their life was not worth living."

Next generation fibre broadband could be partly funded by TV licence fees, according to the Tory party.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne revealed the party's plans to bring 100Mbps internet access to the "majority" of homes by 2017.

Mr Osborne told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "In the 19th Century we built the railways. In the 20th Century we built the motorways.

"In the 21st Century let's build the super-fast broadband network that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs for Britain."

Osborne said where private investors could not be found to cover the cost of laying fibre cables, the licence fee would be used.

The party revealed it believe the BBC should continue to set aside 3.5 per cent of the licence fee, which currently funds the digital switchover, to fund the shortfall from private investors.

However Labour said the Conservatives were simply playing "catch-up" and Liberal Democrat culture, media and sport spokesman Don Foster said:

"Anyone can promise the earth - what matters is how you pay for it".
