"Work More Efficiently in Office for Mac 2011" - Microsoft

Microsoft has added official notice of a variety of key features in the upcoming release of its Office 2011 suite for Mac users.

The feature roundup on Microsoft's Office Blog includes a brief video of developers talking about the new release, along with four primary features:

A new Template Gallery "allows you to quickly and easily pick a template from the built-in designs to the thousands of templates online -allowing you to create a great-looking document right from the start."
The new Outlook for Mac" includes a Conversation View to easily sort emails" and uses a new database format designed to support Spotlight search and Time Machine backups.
A Vista-like Ribbon UI "designed as an evolution of the Office 2008 Elements Gallery," still retains the familiar Mac menu bar and Office toolbars, providing a hybrid UI that melds Windows and Mac features. The ribbon and toolbar can both be minimized "for more screen space or for the more advanced users who rely on keyboard shortcuts."

After reading the .PDF download from [link] , I have been move to do something As the late Anita Roddick said, "Do something. Do anything. Just do something." I'm still not shore what to do, but I have found something wrong.

In the UK you can not give blood as a gay man, with out lying about your sexuality, as on the Nation Blood Services web-site under "Who can give Blood" [link] on question twelve after the one about HIV/AIDS, it asks "Are you a man who has had oral or anal sex with another (even if you use a condom)? Now with out lying and I gather on declarations like this one, I would be breaking the law? Now I'm not a doctor so I not know anything about this but still how can it effect the blood. So when I has some surgery recently, I had to have some blood and now that I'm better I would like to give some of my rare blood group back to the Nation.

It's unfortunate that people of alternate sexualities can't give blood for whatever reason. They act like straights don't get AIDS too. All they need to do is look at the percentages and they see that in the U.S. there are more straight people with AIDS than gays....

Oh i know that it's true. I am bisexual and i give blood all the time. I know that it is probably illegal and all but they don't need to know that. I like donating blood, and knowing that i have saved a few lives. I wish that the gay/bi/trans community would fight for their rights more than they do but we can only do so much. Someday we'll have equal rights.

People seem to think that gay men contract and spread HIV/AIDS more than straight people do and even though it isn't true, people believe it sadly

I'm not sure I understand why people think that HIV and AIDS is strictly a homosexual disease. It has nothing to do with sexuality but the person you sleep with, gay or straight.

I wish it wasn't true, because it's completely unfair and if a gay man's blood saved my life, I wouldn't care that he was gay. I would care that he was a good enough person to help someone else in need.

You know, unless you are asked point blank if you are gay or straight, then you can easily fall under the "don't ask, don't tell" and donate blood all you want. They test the blood before it goes in anyway, I am sure just to make sure noone lied.

This is kinda a cool way to attract attention to the issue, though!

same thing in the us, they claim that gays have a higher risk of std's. i refuse to give blood because they ask that. it's a shame, too, i'm type O positive, which is the most common type, therefore the most needed on average. i tried complaining to the red cross when they told me that, too, but it got swept under the rug.

64-bit iLife '11 said to arrive in August with a 'mystery' application

Apple's iLife '11 suite will launch in August for $79, with all included applications being 64-bit, including a new "mystery" addition, a rumor suggests.

French Apple website Mac4Ever (via Google Translate) reported last week that iLife '11 will launch soon, on Saturday, August 7. The updated application suite is said to include improvements in the Faces and Places features in iPhoto, and will reportedly add greater integration with social networking sites.

Citing a "well informed" source, the site also said that iWeb will be brand new, and iLife '11 will include a new "mystery" application. It also said that iDVD will not be included, and instead will be downloaded like iMovie HD. Finally, the update will also reportedly include a MobileMe gallery beta with Faces and Places.

The iLife suite currently includes iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand and iWeb. The software is included on every new Mac. The last update, iLife '09, launched in January of 2009, with major upgrades to all of its applications, including the Faces and Places features in iPhoto, and the addition of the Precision Editor to iMovie.

In January, Apple was rumored to introduce iLife 2010, a report that didn't pan out. Instead, the Cupertino, Calif., company held a special event to introduce the iPad.

We're paying over the going rate because of Demon's high quality of service and unlimited downloads, my peak personal usage is between 18:00ish and 22:30, and mostly HD video streaming and iTunes content, unless Demon start not counting iPlayer and other streaming services as part of your cap, we'll be going to someone else.

Demon Internet has introduced a fair use policy for its small business broadband packages, putting a cap on the previously unlimited data it offered on certain products.

Announced on Thursday, the new policies involve a 200GB cap on Demon's Business 2+ and 2+ Pro packages and a 100GB cap on the Business 2000, 4000 and 8000 packages. The caps only apply between 8am and midnight, leaving unlimited usage available in the early morning.

"We've recently seen quite an increase in the amount of heavy users on our business broadband products, and as a result we can't continue to support completely unlimited use on these services, so we need to introduce a fair usage policy with peak hour usage restrictions," Demon chief Matt Cantwell wrote in a Thursday blog post.

The new look is designed to reduce the number of clicks it takes to find the image you're looking for and to provide more information about a particular image without having to click through to the result.

The beatings will continue until employee morale improves.

The eight commandments put in place are:

1. Do not join organised crime gangs or activities.

2. Do not engage in illegal gambling, prostitution or drugs.

3. Do not engage in corruption, accept bribes, and accept supplier dinners or gifts.

4. Do not visit shady entertainment venues.

5. Do not engage in improper male-female relations, i.e. extramarital affairs.

7. Do not participate in activities that are bad for physical or mental health.

Cracked it!

I can now hand code CalDAV/WebCal protocol ICS/iCalendar files, which are Outlook 2007/2010, Lotus Notes, Google Calendar, Sunbird and Apple iCal compatible.

There quite simple once you get your head around the 168 page Network Working Group's RFC 5545 document, plus Microsoft's own private definitions for Outlook.

The main part I'm interested in is "METHOD:", which can be either "PUBLISH" or "REQUEST" as well as other things witch does not concern this post.

"PUBLISH" is for making an online calendar.

"REQUEST" is for making an appointment that requires an reply.

This event shows up like this in Apple iCal;

To make the special characters appears in Microsoft Outlook you need to add this "X-ALT-DESC;FMTTYPE=text/html:" and format them as you would for a normal HTML page.

But in this old "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN" format and remember to use "/n" as returns as the HTML still needs to be formatted as a string.

Add a background image to individual table cells in your email
You may have read earlier about our approach to applying a background image to an email. This involved not only adding a background image to the entire HTML page, but wrapping all content in a table with a background image applied to it. However, there was a limitation to this method, in that while you could apply a background image to the entire table, you couldn't apply one to an individual table cell. Thanks to one of our star customers, Brian Thies, we've been shown a little code that not only will allow you to add a background image to a table cell, but works in most major email clients, too!

The skinny is that you have to replace your <html> tag with:

<html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml">

... then add this to your styles in <head>, too:

v:* { behavior: url(#default#VML); display: inline-block; }

As for the <td> you wish to add the background image to, add the following within the cell (where width and height are the dimensions of the image):



This technique has been tested and shown to be working in most major email clients, except Lotus Notes 6/7 (typically). Most important of all, it forces a background image to display in Outlook 2003/2007/2010! If you scroll to the end of Brian's forum thread, you can also see a detailed background color fix, too.

On Wednesday afternoon Apple invited several journalists, including one from Macworld, to its Cupertino campus on Friday for a "press conference about iPhone 4." Presumably the company will use the event to publicly address all the controversy swirling around this product, most notably reports of antenna interference issues.

Discussion of iPhone 4 reception issues kicked into a higher gear this week with Consumer Reports withdrawing its endorsement of the product, despite otherwise higher ratings.
