RIM tweets planned BlackBerry 7 unveiling
Research In Motion promises to give more details about devices featuring the BlackBerry 7 operating system tomorrow.

RIM unveiled its BlackBerry 7 OS at its annual BlackBerry World conference in May. The revamped mobile OS promises easier navigation through its Liquid Graphics interface, as well as faster, richer graphics performance and browsing. The latter is enabled by a revamped BlackBerry browser that includes a just-in-time JavaScript compiler and HTML 5 video support.
BlackBerry 7 OS also brings support for new technologies, including NFC (near-field communications) and augmented reality applications. Voice-enabled search and 720p HD video recording also make their debut on the new OS.

Google Photovine – new photo-sharing social network

Google has begun rolling out a new social-networking photo service, dubbed Photovine.
Though Google has said little publicly about Photovine, the service appears to be one in which consumers can take snaps from their phones and have them upload in a stream of pictures in the same way that tweets flow into Twitter. Presumably, if you subscribe to someone else’s Photovine, you’ll see their latest photos almost as soon as they shoot them.
The service, though, isn’t yet live. There’s only the opportunity to request an invitation on Photovine’s Web site, with no indication of when the service will launch.

Nokia unveils new typeface, Pure

Nokia Sans, one of the most familiar typefaces worldwide and a brand recognition money can’t buy, is about to become irrelevant. The world’s largest phone maker has unveiled a new font dubbed Nokia Pure for mobile and digital environments.
“Logically enough, the starting point for our brand new typeface, Nokia Pure, was also on-screen legibility at small sizes–although now we’re talking about the pin-sharp color screens of contemporary smartphones,”
Nokia said in a blog post on its Brand Book site.
“At the same time, we also needed a recognizable corporate typeface, versatile enough to work well in all manner of different environments–from other screen-based formats, to a whole host of printed materials.”

Windows 98 and XP make sweet music
I thought I would start Tuesday off with some lighter fare. Some of you may have seen this, but there is a YouTube video of music composed using the start-up sounds from Windows XP and Windows 98.
I’m sure it’s not the biggest challenge facing Vista, but it is a small example of people finding utility from and an affinity for Microsoft’s older Windows versions. What do you think, is it an anthem for XP’s enduring quality or a swan song for an operating system on the precipice of extinction? I’ve included the video below.

EDIT 4: Make sure you get this version of ModPlug Tracker:

That will install itself as a program, which you can start running from the Start menu, as you would with most other programs. ![]()
A guide for getting started with ModPlug Tracker can be found here (I didn’t make it) :

EDIT 3: Just to try to avoid me having to reply to every other comment which says that it must have taken me ages to make, or that I must’ve been bored:
This was just a way for me to pass a few hours of boredom. Yes, I WAS bored. No, I’m not trying to “prove” anything – that this is what I’m “capable of”. I just thought I’d upload my music as a video here, to YouTube. I’m not the one who spread it around to Digg or random blogs, – I uploaded it here at YouTube some time back in December 2007 and it has only just “taken off”, after all.
EDIT 2: I’m making the IT file be available now too, don’t really mind any more. I guess I’m too busy working on new things (not mod music) to worry about the ‘old’ ones. ![]()

The music is about 1:31 long. After that, I show the sounds which were used.

CBR (320 Kb/sec) EXTENDED VERSION:
If the extended version above gives you problems – such as cutting off at the end, because the duration was miscalculated (appears to happen with iTunes?), then I’ve made this constant bitrate version, as an alternative to the variable bitrate version above. This will fix the cutting off and miscalculation of the duration, but is a little unnecessarily large and is a little lower quality than VBR (but highest possible when using CBR).

Google TV Remote, epic fail

If the remote to the right and the following review are to be the standard for Google TV, Google have missed the mark set by Apple in 2007 by a long way. Even Microsoft Media Centres remote was much better, it looks like the early webTVs and we all remember how successful they where!
AppleTV 2.0 has got the idea completely right, no one wants content to sit on the TV, they want it on their PC / Mac, the thing with the backed-up disk space investment and number crunching power. Also the ability to take it to, say there friends and show that movie you’ve been raving about.
The below review has convinced me not to buy a Google TV device, yet anyway!
Re: Sony NSX-46GT1 (Google TV)
Pros: more than i even know, there are so many crazy short cuts and cool things this tv can do. if you want a tv that can also act as a computer (for entertainment purposes) this is for you. the amount of free movies, vids, and media is never ending
Cons: i’m a techie IT guy and this tv makes me feel like my grandma trying to program her vcr, but i’ve only had 1 day so give me a few more and i’ll get better hopefully. tv is very easy to setup but very complicated to use to its full potential so far.
Summary: i love it so far but before i knew it i had wasted about 5 hours of my awesome life just playing around with this tv trying to figure out all the awesome things it can do. it will definitely take me a while to learn how to use some of the more cooler features of this tv. originally i was pushing for the tv and my wife was like “do we have to, why” and after she got her crack at it she told me this morning how addicted she already is to it. if you watch any sort of videos on your computer throughout your day this tv is for you.
from The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time
WebTV (1995): Getting the Web to display on a typical TV in 1995 was like watching an elephant tap-dance–you were amazed not that it could do it well but that it could do it at all. With the WebTV, Web pages looked horsey, some media formats didn’t work at all, and using the remote control to hop from link to link was excruciating.Dan Tynan, PCWorld
Apple iPad rival, NEC LifeTouch
NEC LifeTouch Android-based tablet, would be an instant fail, as it seems, according to the video to require a stylus. If not, maybe NEC’s demo below, should of not shown it off with one!
“will be sold by NEC to corporate clients”
OEMs and PC World?
TOKYO — Japan’s NEC will begin selling this Android-based tablet computer this month, but it won’t be trying to compete directly with the iPad. The LifeTouch is intended to be used as an access device for cloud-based services and will be sold by NEC to corporate clients.
Google go beyond Instant, with preview!
Search previews went live later on Tuesday, although they may take longer to roll out worldwide. Google is calling this instant preview, said Jeremy Silber, tech lead and manager of web search features. Google searchers will start to see small magnifying glasses next to search results. Clicking on that magnifying glass will produce a grainy preview with an enlarged snippet of the search terms highlighted. If the user likes what they see, they can click through to the site.
