Contagion – Bacteria Billboard

Building on its reputation for always being ahead of the curve, Warner Bros. Pictures Canada created a unique outdoor installation merging science and advertising that is guaranteed to leave movie lovers, science buffs and art enthusiasts in ‘awe’ or ‘eww’.
In support of Academy Award ® winner Steven Soderbergh’s latest film “Contagion” — in theatres September 9th, Warner Bros. Pictures Canada teamed up with microbiologists and immunologists from around the world to create a one-of-a-kind bacteria message board located at 409 Queen Street West in an abandoned store-front window. On August 28th, two large Petri dishes were inoculated with live bacteria including penicillin, mold and pigmented bacteria and almost overnight have revealed the true Contagion — an artistic interpretation of the spread of a virus as depicted in the film.
The public was invited to witness first-hand the remarkable growing power of natural bacteria on Wednesday August 31st from 11:00 AM — 2:00 PM. The first 50 people who arrived received passes to see “Contagion” in theatres and other themed prizes.

Portal: No Escape

Portal: No Escape is a must see for everyone, but especially video game fans. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who has been directing commercials for the last few years, slowly working towards his feature film directorial debut. In May, he directed a horror short film “More Than You Can Chew” for Black Box TV, which got a bunch of people in Hollywood talking. Dan surprise premiered a new short film at Comic-Con, which was met with a standing ovation by the almost packed crowd. The film brings a grounded realism to this sci-fi concept, which is rarely seen in video game movie adaptations. Watch Portal: No Escape now embedded after the jump.

It’s official: Criterion buys SeeSaw
An investor consortium led by Criterion Capital Partners has bought SeeSaw.com, a site that aspired to become Hulu of the U.K. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but former owner Arqiva is retaining a 25 percent stake in the video platform. SeeSaw’s new chairman will be Michael Jackson, who previously served as controller at BBC One and Two as well as CEO at the U.K.’s Channel 4.
SeeSaw has a bit of a turbulent past: The site is the heir of Project Kangaroo, a failed attempt by the BBC and other U.K. broadcasters to launch a Hulu-like joint-venture for catchup TV viewing. Kangaroo was found to be anti-competitive by U.K. regulators before it could even get off the ground, and the project’s assets were bought by Arqiva for £8 million ($12.9 million) two years ago. Arqiva used the technology to launch its own video platform under the name SeeSaw in early 2010 and has since grown the service to close to one million unique visitors per month.
However, it became clear earlier this year that Arqiva wasn’t willing or able to grow the service on its own. The company actively looked for additional investors, but was apparently haunted by the ghosts of SeeSaw’s past: Getting one the big broadcasters on board would have been the best bet to turn SeeSaw into a success story, but it was also close to impossible due to the anti-competition ruling against Project Kangaroo.

Click on the video or here to watch
Uncomfortable seats with little leg room have long been a source of torment for visitors to theatres around the UK.
Now one of Britain’s biggest theatre groups is replacing all 40,000 of its seats with ones which, it says, will stop people fidgeting.
London’s Fortune Theatre is the first to have the new ergonomic seating fitted.
Other venues in the UK including the West End’s Savoy Theatre and the Edinburgh Playhouse are set to follow.
David Sillito went to try them out.

Spotify finally launches in USA
Streaming music service Spotify is set to launch in the US, after thrashing out deals with the major record companies.
Its American service had previously been put on hold, apparently because the labels were not convinced about its ability to make them money.
About 10 million people use Spotify across parts of Europe, with one million paying for its premium service.
The company has reduced elements of its free product, ahead of the US launch.
In April, limits were introduced on the number of times users of the basic version could play tracks.
Total listening time was also reduced to 10 hours per month for the free service.
