Lego – Tommy Cooper

Lego commercial - Tommy Cooper

An extremely clever ad — one from your childhood. A slightly surreal look at all the things you can make out of a box a Lego. Narrated by Tommy Cooper, a battle ensues between a mouse which, when threatened by a cat, turns into a dog. The cat turns into a dragon and so on, to a submarine and a submarine-eating kipper. The submarine eventually morphs into an elephant, the mouse rebuilds and the elephant faints. Lego: It’s a new toy every day — just like that!

the short film HOMOPHOBIA

HOMOPHOBIA (Short Film)

May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia (IDAHO). In the last few years reports of teenage suicide due to gay bullying have increased drastically. Projects like the „It Gets Better Project“ and the “Out4Marriage” Project want to raise awareness for this problem and provide a perspective of hope.

Inspired by those projects, the short film HOMOPHOBIA, available now for free on youtube.projecthomophobia.com, wants to contribute to raising awareness and create empathy for the topic since gay bullying and homophobia are still very present in today’s society.
“Laws can prevent people from doing crimes, but they don’t change people’s thinking. Art can touch people on an emotional level and therefore really make an impact”, says Gregor Schmidinger, the director of HOMOPHOBIA.

“People often connect homophobia with hate”, he says, “but it’s really about fear (phobia). It’s the fear of the unknown and sometimes of the unknown within ourselves. With HOMOPHOBIA I want to portray this conflict and provide people with new perspectives on an empathetic level.” Sharing the movie on Facebook and Twitter helps to spread the word and beat homophobia.

The world premier of HOMOPHOBIA was in Vienna, on May 11th. 600 people consisting of politicians, filmmakers, activists as well as the cast and crew celebrated the release of HOMOPHOBIA. City Council Sandra Frauenberger praised the movie and thanked the team for their “commitment and time” they invested in the movie.

The story of HOMOPHOBIA is set in the environment of the Austrian Military Forces. Michael, a young soldier, experiences homosexual feelings for Raphael, one of his comrades. During their last night at the Austrian-Hungarian Border, the suppressed conflict bubbles to the surface.

The movie was partly funded through crowd funding. More than 10.000$ were donated to execute the movie. The crowd funders were also able to take part in the project. In a hidden Facebook group, the team shared different production steps with the funders. The script, the casting, the selection of the poster motive – everything was laid open for discussions and ideas within the group.

The cast was found through an online casting. More than 30 people sent in their video and a small selection was invited to a personal casting in Vienna. “With Michael Glantschnig [Michael], Josef Mohamed [Raphael] and Günther Sturmlechner [Jürgen] we’ve found the perfect cast. They have a great group dynamic, which is really important for the dynamic of the characters within the movie.”

HOMOPHOBIA is available online on youtube.projecthomophobia.com // vimeo.projecthomophobia.com and will be submitted to international film festivals within the next year.

60,000 Dominos

60,000 Dominos

This is FlippyCat’s personal record for most dominos used at once.

Don’t miss when FlippyCat uploads a new video… subscribe to FlippyCat’s channel and follow FlippyCat on
http://facebook.com/flippycat
http://twitter.com/flippycat

In this chain reaction there are 60 big dominos each containing 990 dominos, and a small field of 600 dominos (which says 60,000) to bring the total up to 60,000 dominos used.

The big dominos span about 14 feet across. It took approximately 65.5 hours to complete over 8 days. In the setup footage, the counter changes color on each day.

The entire setup fell in approximately 12 seconds. The closest guesses FlippyCat was able to spot in the comments on FlippyCat’s preview video were by:

http://www.youtube.com/Annodominovideos
http://www.youtube.com/CharlesOver9000
http://www.youtube.com/MrGeomaster
http://www.youtube.com/SimonInGear

If you pay close attention to the setup sequence, you can find one domino FlippyCat built while wearing the wrong color shirt!! Oh no!

After building this, FlippyCat was able to count FlippyCat’s remaining dominos and FlippyCat have roughly 7700 left over.

Volkswagen concept car in China

Volkswagen concept car in China
When you think of a basic, affordable vehicle that everyone can buy, a hover car doesn’t immediately come to mind. But that’s what emerged from the People’s Car Project launched by Volkswagen in China last year.

Volkswagen, which translates to “people’s car” in English, challenged China residents to submit their ideas of what the car of the future should look like. The company sifted through more than 119,000 ideas submitted to the project Web site and compiled three concepts, including the Hover Car.

The Hover Car is a two-seater zero emissions vehicle that hovers above ground and travels along electromagnetic road networks. It can detect other vehicles on the road while navigating China’s congested traffic centers, and its small footprint makes it easy to park.

Electromagnetic highways where vehicles can be operated autonomously and continuously powered have been floated by other automotive designers. Stanford researchers are working on electric highway technology that will solve the wireless charging part of the equation, and it’s only a matter of time until we’re all relaxing behind the wheel of a self-driving car. So maybe the Hover Car isn’t so far-fetched after all. Whether or not it could be affordable enough for the masses is the real question.

William Fichtner plays Chess with Flat Eric

William Fichtner plays Chess with Flat Eric

I know there’s something about Quentin Dupieux‘s films that rub people the wrong way, but I have a deep affection for the absurdity of Rubber. (I haven’t yet had a chance to see his new feature, Wrong.) I get great enjoyment from his irreverent, slightly pretentious take on film.

And so I’ll give some time to what is effectively an ad for the musical half of his career, in which Dupieux performs as Mr. Oizo. He’s got a new record out, and to promote it Dupieux enlisted the aid of one of his actors from WrongWilliam Fichtner. Since I have even more fondness for Fichtner, I’m happy to see him struggling through a chess game against a distracted puppet, in the clip that follows.

Points should be awarded, also, for the best boombox ever.

Homecoming

An independent short film from the Coalition of Equal Marriage is the first of its kind to rally support using Facebook and Twitter, ahead of the government’s plans to redefine UK civil marriage to include same-sex couples.

Produced by award winning young filmmaker, Mike Buonaiuto, the short film shows British forces returning home to greet their loved ones, with the reunion of one soldier and his partner soon turning into a surprise marriage proposal. The film looks to tackle the opposition head on, arguing if all have the right to serve in British military regardless of sexuality, then all should be able celebrate their love and commitment with civil marriage, free from discrimination.

“One day I would like to marry my partner of almost 5 years,” said Director Mike Buonaiuto. “And the celebration of our commitment should mean no more or less than any other straight couple. I made the film to promote change and also inspire others to use their creativity to support equality.”

The Coalition For Equal Marriage is a grassroots campaign established by partners Conor Marron and James Lattimore. It has since grown into a strong group of individuals and organisations coming together to support the government’s plans for greater equality.

The short film stars James Knight, from London’s West End (Mamma Mia,) and rising screen-star Lew Smart. Please support the project by sharing it with your friends, hashtag #equalmarriage and sign the Coalition For Equal Marriage petition at: www.C4EM.org.uk
