The Côte Sauvage [English: Savage Coast], on the Atlantic coast of , is in the Charente-Maritime department. The coastline starts near La Palmyre, north of Royan, and stretches northwest around the point La Tremblade. L'île d'Oléron, France's second-largest island (after Corsica) is just off the .

A seaside resort, Royan is in the heart of an area estimated at 38,638 inhabitants, which makes it the fourth-largest conurbation in the department, after , Saintes and Rochefort. Capital of the “Côte de beauté”, the is located at the mouth of the Gironde Estuary, the largest estuary in Europe. Royan has five sandy beaches, a marina and a fishing port.
