To mark our celebrations and support of Pride 2020, we will be posting occasional profiles of prominent LGBT+ personalities through history who have helped change the world not just for ONE community, but for the WHOLE community. It's a timely reminder that just as the actions of individuals have the potential to cause pain, heartbreak and injustice, so the power of some individuals can take us forward.
Karl Heinrich Ulrichs is thought to have been the first gay person to publicly speak out for homosexual rights. In 1867, he urged the German government to repeal anti-homosexuality laws, which firmly established himself as the pioneer of the gay rights movement.
