National Rail and the Rose tinted glasses

The National Rail iPhone App is how I find train and platform times and often has the platform of a train before the in station boards. This is obviously good, until God forbid an accident happens and trains stop arriving and leaving Paddington station, like what happened today. You’d think the app would reflect this with cancelled train delayed train etc. But no the reality below;

I thought this could be that the information was not on plan and so the in station board were being updated manually by the FGW control room in the ether. Which as over hearing the radio chatter the formation of services seems to be a direct relation to people’s needs on the platforms. If only the same could be said of southeastern ! How ever as below shows, although the services in times of disruption are formed ad-hoc. This information is feed back to National Rail, who after all run Paddington and all major London stations. So the boards are updated off the Internet;

If this page from the National Rail Enquires web-site is reflection what is going on “Live” at Paddington with a services disruption message as well and from what I understand the in station boards and the iPhone app all use the same information source, how come the iPhone App doesn’t reflect this, it’ll show cancelled service and not late or delayed ones.

Major changes to rail services over Christmas

Reading Station and railway line will be closing from the 27 December to 3 January to begin a programme of multi-million pound improvement works.

While this will be of benefit to customers in the long term, it does unfortunately mean that there will be periods where we are unable to run services on the Reading line. This means anyone planning on travelling over the Christmas period to, from or through the Reading area will be affected and should try to plan their journey in advance.

We are doing everything we can to get you to your destination. We are running trains via diversionary routes and when this is not possible replacing trains with a bus replacement service.

  • Travelling from the West of England? Trains will run into London Waterloo
  • Travelling from South Wales and Bristol? Trains will run via Banbury and Oxford

Great Western to be electrified

It has been reported that next week’s government announcement regarding rail investment will see the Great Western Main Line between Paddington and Cardiff electrified and plans to electrify the Midland Main Line shelved.

The Manchester to Liverpool route will also receive funding for its electrification.

A coalition source said that recent improvements to the MML route meant that electrification was no longer a priority.

An official announcement is expected next Tuesday.

Didcot Parkway to get £5.7m revamp

Why is it a waste of money??? You do not live in didcot and realise its essential work as the town is growing year by year.

In a time of austerity it is a waste of money the station is fine as it is! £6million could be better spent building badly needed social housing. Just because Picto68 lives in Carterton he/she has a right to express a view because we all pay council tax to O.C.C through are local district councils.

This is very unfair on Didcot Council and OCC, I’m a regular commuter to London and love everything about Didcot, I live only 10 mins anyway from the station and even closer to the tracks and power lines. But it still beats London, as about 5 mins walk away is the Oxfordshire countryside.

Any improvement to the already overcrowded train network is welcome and you must remember is going hand-in-hand with improvements at Reading and all across the Great Western.

Also about the “First Late Weastern” jibe, I also commute from Kent from time to time and although the trains in on the Great Weatern are sometimes a little late, thats nothing compared to the time Kent trains take to do a fraction of the distance.

Dartford to London Bridge 45 mins, Didcot Parkway to London Paddington 45 mins

And late arrival figaures speak for them selves.

First Great Western 91.6% Punctuality 2010 Moving Annual Average (MAA)

Southeastern 88.9% Punctuality 2010 Moving Annual Average (MAA)

BEST OCTOBER EVER SEES ALMOST 93% OF TRAINS ON TIME

Didcot Parkway to get £5.7m revamp

One: Good that they’re improving this station as, currently there is only one high speed platform and a increase in these could mean more trains stopping.

Two: I hope that it doesn’t change the current service from the station during the work or I’ll be most cheesed off.

Didcot Parkway railway station in Oxfordshire is set to get a multi-million pound revamp.

Oxfordshire County Council has agreed to fund most of the £5.7m project.

South Oxfordshire District Council is set to put £800,000 towards the scheme. Work is set to start in April next year.

More than three million people use the station every year and the work is designed to give it a total overhaul and to improve access for passengers.

County council leaders said the scheme was still going ahead despite the widespread spending cuts announced by the government last month.
