Dame Barbara Windsor, the real-life East-Ender who became a national treasure during a showbiz career spanning more than 60 years, died last night after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 83.

The actress’s husband Scott Mitchell announced the news early today, saying his ‘best friend and soul mate’ passed away peacefully in a London care home at 8.35pm.

He said his wife’s final weeks were ‘typical of how she lived her life’ and ‘full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit until the end’.
